Being an Elliott wave analyst can help you -- in up and down markets.

After rallying for three years, the stock market has retreated since May 1.

What is wave analysis telling you about the direction of the trend? If you're not sure, perhaps it's time to get your Elliott wave education.

A year and a half ago, EWI introduced an Elliott wave analysis educational program and we're glad to report that it's been very well received: It allows you to become a Certified Elliott Wave Analyst!

You can earn the Certificate step by step, which is ideal if you're just starting to learn Elliott wave analysis. If this does describe you, here's an interesting exercise: See if you can answer a sample question from the Certified Elliott Wave Analyst exam.

Here's the question: Does the graphic below represent a valid wave pattern?

You'll find the correct answer below, so please keep reading.

Let's be honest: mastering the Elliott Wave Principle takes discipline. You already know that if you've been at it awhile. And you can likely attest to what A.J. Frost and Robert Prechter Jr. wrote in the classic book, Elliott Wave Principle: Key to Market Behavior (p. 94):

After you have acquired an Elliott 'touch,' it will be forever with you, just as a child who learns to ride a bicycle never forgets.

Indeed, if you've already acquired that "touch," why not go ahead and get your Certificate? You'll have evidence of the discipline you've acquired, plus become eligible for the potential benefits.

One great advantage of becoming a Certified Elliott Wave Analyst is that you can promote your expertise to potential employers and clients, and help advance your career as a financial professional.

Another great advantage is that you can apply for eligibility to teach EWI-licensed courses.

You'll also belong to an elite group. Consider this quote from the definitive text, Elliott Wave Principle: Key to Market Behavior (page 92):

Any dedicated student can perform expert Elliott wave analysis. Those who neglect to study the subject thoroughly or apply the tools rigorously give up before really trying. The best learning procedure is to keep an hourly chart and try to fit all the wiggles into Elliott wave patterns while keeping an open mind for all the possibilities. Slowly the scales should drop from your eyes, and you will be continually amazed at what you see.

The Wave Principle is truly worthy of study. Be assured: the Certified Elliott Wave Analyst Program is designed and administered by Elliott Wave International.

[Answer: The wave count displayed graphically above is not valid. Why not? Wave 3 can never be the shortest wave.]

The Elliott Wave Principle is a detailed description of how financial markets behave. The description reveals that mass psychology swings from pessimism to optimism and back in a natural sequence, creating specific Elliott wave patterns in price movements. Each pattern has implications regarding the position of the market within its overall progression, past, present and future. The purpose of Elliott Wave International’s market-oriented publications is to outline the progress of markets in terms of the Wave Principle and to educate interested parties in the successful application of the Wave Principle. While a course of conduct regarding investments can be formulated from such application of the Wave Principle, at no time will Elliott Wave International make specific recommendations for any specific person, and at no time may a reader, caller or viewer be justified in inferring that any such advice is intended. Investing carries risk of losses, and trading futures or options is especially risky because these instruments are highly leveraged, and traders can lose more than their initial margin funds. Information provided by Elliott Wave International is expressed in good faith, but it is not guaranteed. The market service that never makes mistakes does not exist. Long-term success trading or investing in the markets demands recognition of the fact that error and uncertainty are part of any effort to assess future probabilities. Please ask your broker or your advisor to explain all risks to you before making any trading and investing decisions.
